What Is an M3U Playlist?
A plain-language explanation of M3U playlists — what they are, what's inside one, and how to use one with a player like MigFLIX.
An M3U file is a plain text playlist. Instead of holding video itself, it holds a list of links — one per line — that point to channels, movies, or other streams. Open one in a compatible player and it turns into a browsable library instead of a wall of URLs.
Most IPTV and streaming providers give new customers an M3U link (a URL that returns this playlist) rather than a downloadable file. That link is what you paste into a player to load everything the provider offers.
What's actually inside an M3U file
A basic M3U file is just a header followed by pairs of lines: one line of metadata (a channel or title name, sometimes a logo and category) and one line with the actual stream URL. A player reads through the whole list and builds a library from it — grouping entries by category, showing artwork where available, and making everything searchable.
M3U link vs. M3U file
You'll run into both. An M3U link is a URL you paste in — the player fetches the current playlist from it, so it stays up to date automatically. An M3U file is a static snapshot saved to your device; it won't reflect changes the provider makes until you re-import a fresh copy.
